(And, if ya ask me, that's a good thing!)
After our days of rain we've got a reprieve - at least a short one. Today's supposed to be super sunny yet stay below 80. We slept in BIG time, finally getting out of bed around 11 (that doesn't include getting up for the super-early cat feeding to get them to leave us alone, bathroom breaks, etc). Did a little snacking. Shared my mixed berry yogurt with Tucker (he's insane about it - is yogurt bad for cats!?) And then while Brett was watching some TV I decided to check out the back 40 (har har) and let the cats stretch their legs.
WOW! Sure, we've had a lot of rain and some warm weather, but I did NOT expect the growth spurts!!! I think all the dahlias have doubled (or more!) in height in the last few days. Some of the potted tomato plants have done the same. I found the small potted catnips on the patio table were found by visitors and chewed down - have had to stash them again! Can't be the same visitors chewing the basil on the patio table (all the other basil plants seem fine), so I'm assuming there's a slug living in one of the pots and making visits to the little basil that really wants to live....so I moved it over to the grill for now.
Amazing with all this weather a few pots in poorly placed positions were bone dry - so I had to get out the hose and water those, plus the hanging baskets (SUPER lush and colorful in the back, getting lush but lacking much more than green in the front) were also kinda dry. Since it's warming up and the sun's out, I get them a good dose of water as well.
Looks like the raspberries growing out of the back wall are starting to get some red to them, while the ones up against the house are a little later in their development. Not going to get much out of any of them this year, but I don't give them special treatment - no pruning or anything like that to inspire more production. Once we get a new place I'll plan to give them more space and move TLC.
Had to move the curly leaf mint - even though it's potted up and tucked in behind the raspberries (I think the raspberries would win that battle), it's starting to get curious and send out runners. I moved it over to the rock wall - just LET it try to get a foothold in there. (Oh, who am I kidding - I can get nasturtiums to grow in the wall, and the potted raspberries jumped ship last year with a couple runners and now I have raspberries coming up in new places!)
Hm. Mint. Also got a little parsley growing back there (doesn't do as well confined to a pot!?). Storebought (blah!) tomatoes on the counter. Bulgar wheat in the cabinet and a couple lemons in the crisper drawer. I think I'm making tabouleh later today! :)
We're talking about maybe going for a short walk in a little bit - Brett's foot with a possible bone spur will let us know how far we can go. Need to stop by Rick & Carolyn's and feed Ayla the cat while they're in New Orleans at the ALA conference (same place Peter's at!). Need to stop by WalMart for some twine for the garden. Maybe I can get Brett to go along for a ride out to the garden - I could do a little more weeding and finish twine on the teepees!
Oh, and about that "I smell like sage" header? At first I was thinking it was because I brushed up against some of the sage out back, but I don't remember doing that. At least not the culinary stuff - and it really doesn't leave a scent on me THAT easily when I do. But I DO know I was poking in and around the Russian sage, and wow, that'll really leave it's scent on ya! Just as good a smell, although sometimes with a sticky residue. Seems I escaped that this time.
Hope everyone's having a great day!

If you could just smell like browned sage butter and pumpkin ravioli, you'd be perfect!
I love sage, but i love the smell of lemon thyme best.. I am off to fix dinner for the oinkers.. 11 and 10 year old boys eat A LOT of food. Tonight I think will be fettucini alfredo.. From scratch not from those bottles.. Have you guys tried the bottled stuff, it is nasty...
Mmmm...I bet I'd be good, but maybe feel a little scorchy? LOL First I thought you were going to say "If you could just smell like brownie..." And that wouldn't be so bad! LOL
I'm with you Alison - LOVE the lemon thyme! In fact, I was influenced by the recipe over at Steven's site to do some sorta pasta/herby/chickeny dinner (about to start), and made sure to grab some lemon thyme while I was out there with a handful of parsley, basil and oregano. Also pinched some mint, but I'm not sure how well that'll go over.
And, sorry Steven, I had to buy frozen peas! I know, I know - they're totally acceptable, but they feel like I'm cheating after reading your blog!
OH! And I saw the tiniest baby green tomato out back!!! I was suprised - it's in one of those "I'm still waiting to get planted" 4x4 inch pots!
frozen peas are the greatest achievement of our civilisation!
I'm with Steven on the peas - how many ramen noodle packages have I gussied up with them?
Jeph, not sure about what type Russian sage is, but I do love the dcent of sage. And I was sort of scanning the post thinking of how the herb might combine with raspberries in a pork or chicken dish, maybe quail. Mmmmm. Try a sage and hazelnut pesto, maybe?
Very good dinner tonight, and I'm winding down now from it. Ahhhhh....
Peter
Stop it right now! The 80's are over and we're free of terrible "chefs" sticking raspberries where they're not wanted.
I just want to forget that grilled swordfish was presented to me in a pool of raspberry coulis at a dinner party where a very famous chef was in the kitchen.
I also want to forget that I had a platinum blonde crewcut and was wearing an oversized Yohji Yamamoto suit at the time, but alas.. there are pictures.
Now I've got a bad case of the giggles - thanks so much!
I wish the raspberries would hurry up and ripen. Made some shortcakes this weekend and have been eating storebought strawberries and blueberries on them. Raspberries would be a nice addition.
In addition to sprinkling the fruit with sugar like the first time, I was prepping them the second time and thought to myself "What would Peter do?" (Ok, I didn't get TOO crazy) So I hit a lemon with the microplane over them for just a little zest (single serving!), and then added a LITTLE lemon juice. MMMM - that really did it!
Is there anything except maybe chocolate milk, that lemon zest can't make better?
Toothpaste?
I could see lemon/mint toothpaste as long as it was tartar control...
Hm.
Come on Steven, the acidity of raspberries can be good with things. Though the coulis with swordfish sounds not even well-intentioned enough to call misguided!
Pleaseohpleaseohplease post the platinum blonde photos?
Ah, a challenge: what will lemon not go with? We used to play this game by trying to think of dessert flavours that would pair poorly with chocolate. Much as I love licorice, I'm still not convinced it matches especially well with the stuff.
But back to lemons/lemon zest. Ummmmm. Hmmmm. Omelettes? Sorry, brealfast on my mind here!
Christa over at Calendula and Concrete has a recipe using chocolate and tarragon so it may disprove your licorice and chocolate theory. I'm one of the people who likes the salty licorice and not the sweet unless it's sambuca. No dice on the platinum blonde pics, this is food and garden chat, not fashion mistakes.
Salty is good, though maybe not the double or triple salted stuff!
Chocolate and tarragon? You know, having tasted horrible dried tarragon too many times, I'm wary of the fresh stuff even though I know it's worlds apart.
And as for fashion mistakes: maybe a new blog separate from your gardening one?
I'll second that call for the new blog!!
My fashion mistakes would need too much server space. Being in the nightclub business in my twenties gave me a false sense of confidence in what I should wear and it ranged from the very bad to the barely covering anything. I was basically an attention whore.
Let sleeping dogs and jeans that are more holes than fabric lie.
You have NO IDEA how long Peter and I can run a topic... >:-)
Worse still, we'll hound you on it every chance we get. Come on Steven, Jeph and I demand funny and embarrasing photos of you in the 80s!
We sure do!
