With Notch I could lay out on the grassy hill, nestling my head against his belly while we watched the clouds, the birds, the bugs....enjoying the breeze. He'd let me run my fingers through his soft fur, purring, while I talked to him like he was another person...or like the traditional image of "a guy and his dog."
Anyhow, I didn't mean for this post to be about anything other than the pretty nasturtium colors out back. Enjoy...

I know how tough it is, sometimes while I am outside I can still feel Taz watching me from beneath the Hydrangeas.. I believe they continue to live on and are with us.. We had him for 12 years and his death was sudden and traumatizing.. I cried when I saw that Notch died.. Brought up some feelings.. But, I look at our new kittens and think of how he would have been so kind with them and smile.. I think we are going to keep the orange tabby, (male) , but aren't sure just yet.. They are 2 weeks old (almost) and they make me laugh.. Okay I am done rambling.. Come and see them and my pics of the Tetons (the real ones, not the naughty version.)

Your Nasturtiums look great! Have you tried eating the blooms? Its one of the few flowers you can actually eat. They don't taste like much, but they sure add beauty to a salad!
I put this in a comment on a post on my blog, but I think it bears repeating here (where it's more likely to be shared!) It's a quote from Rabbi Marc Gellman's column (MSNBC/Newsweek) shortly after his dog Miles passed away:

I think it's difficult to grasp the notion of savoring grief, but I love the idea that it's "the way the gift of unconditional love is painfully but properly paid."
Gorgeous flowers Jeph, and do try them in salads as suggested. In fact, you can eat the leaves as well. Both flowers and leaves are peppery, mind you.

I was SOOOO excited to try nasturtium blossoms the first year I gardened. I didn't even know what exactly they were going to look like, didn't realize the plants could get SOOOO big, didn't expect the loads of flowers they'd put out, etc... And then they were edible too? COOL!
Boy was I set up for a disappointment! Blech! I know folks are supposed to like them, but there's something about that "peppery" taste nasturtiums have that really turned me off.
To give them a fair shot, I've tried them again since - in fact, I know I tried one in the backyard earlier this summer. Still the same unpleasant taste. I wish I could agree with you Marc - I'd rather they not "taste like much"! ;-)
They ARE good for propping up next to something you're taking pictures off - exotic looking, great colors, etc.

Thanks for the kind words...and the pics of the cute kittens. I've had a number of people tell me that Moxie (the kitten we rescued from the highway a few weeks ago) was sent to us. First we were considered heroes for rescuing her, and now that Notch is gone, people say she was sent here to...I don't want to use the word "replace"...but you understand.
I'll be doing fine for quite awhile, and then something really sets me off, and I miss his "weight", like when he'd have me cradle all 16lbs and carry him around, or cradle him while watching tv, etc.
Man, looking at those kitten pics again. SO CUTE!!! I'd have a hard time choosing between the gray/tabby and the orange one... I posted a link for you over at your site - go check it out, but only if you have your cute-resisting force field up. If not, you're bound to keep all...four? five?...kittens.
Our cat Murphy (siamese kitten born on my Uncles farm in Kansas around the time we were passing through, moving from Hawaii to Ohio) had three litters of kittens - the first litter was six!! It's amazing just how much "cat" six kittens amount to!!! Wake up in the middle of the nite and find you've got the majority of them piled up in bed with you - fun!
And I see no new recipes posted - tsk tsk!
