Preparing to can

Stopped at Walmart on the way home today...  Picked up a 21 qt version of those black-with-white-speckles pots - not super tall, but plenty wide.  I was able to fit 9 pint jars in it with PLENTY of overhead.  I picked up a 12 pack of the pint jars and something like 16 of the half pints?  They're all loaded up in the dishwasher, ready to run with the heat-dry mode overnite, so that way it'll be all perfectly cleansed before I try my hand at canning again - hopefully tomorrow nite or this weekend.  I'm thinking bread and butter pickles and salsa!?  Before long I'll be wanting to buy up a case of some sort of fruit and making jelly - you watch!

Tomorrow's Friday - yay!  Really ready for the weekend...  Hope to get in some reading time, some cooking time (minestrone!?  Farmgirl's Simple Summer Harvest Soup?!), some socializing time with Dave and Jay at the Greek festival, some web work time...who knows what else!?  We're also doing more house hunting I hope, and just putting this last week behind us.  Sharon's moving back home from San Diego - she and Justin have turned it into an adventuresome road trip, and they just started the first fun leg of their journey today.  Can't wait to see all their pics, not to mention have her back!

That's all for now.  Need to get to bed, get in a little reading, give the cats some loving, and watch Brett doze off...  He's so good to me.  :)

Didja get a canner with a rack in it or just a big pot? You can use a big pot as a canner, but you run the risk of jars cracking because of uneven heating without a rack.

Welcome to the Canning Cult, now if I can just enroll you in the Trader Joe's Cult.....

I did not.

And I saw this entry come in while at work today.

So I stopped by the local hardware/landscaping/etc business in town and, sure enough, they had the same size canning pot (21 qt) WITH rack...so I bought it. And a "jar grabber". And a food mill! Oy!

The original pot will go back to Wal-Mart this weekend (funny - it was $3 more!).

Just prerusing some stuff on line to see what last minute pointers I can get!

Thanks for the insight - glad you mentioned it!

Trader Joe's is a little outta range for "just a grocery store"... ;-) Although my best friend Michele is trying to convince me we should plan to do the West Side Market in Cleveland one of the days I'm going to be off while Brett's in Hallifax for a wedding. That could be fun - even though I already have so much stuff here. Haven't been to the market in probably two years? Have you ever been on one of your Cleveland excursions Steven?

Westside Market has benn recommended to me several times. I need to go to the Apple Store in Beachwood, so I may hit Westside on my way back.
