My Generation

Something Brett forwarded - sounds all doom and gloomy at first - but make sure to watch it all the way through...

And if you're on FB and the video didn't come through, check it out here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42E2fAWM6rA

The long wait...

Have you ever heard about something that you got really excited about? You knew it wasn't going to be out for a little while yet, but that's ok because when it did come out, you were gonna get your hands on that brand new shiny thing, and you were gonna LOVE IT!

Well about, oh, 23 years ago, DC Comics announced The Teen Titans: The Game graphic novel. It was going to be a special graphic novel released separately from the on-going run of the Teen Titans title, and people were really excited to hear about it. This was back when George Perez and Marv Wolfman were working on the title. I'm trying to remember if one or even both of them had stepped away from the comic for awhile, and this was going to be the return to great times! These guys had one of the most popular comics when they started it up, and it was always the first read/top of the pile when I got new comics. Time passed, the title got dull, etc etc...

And then Games was announced and things got exciting again.

Only it never happened. There were other projects to work on. I know George Perez switched over to working for Marvel for awhile. I don't know what Marv Wolfman was up to. A few times over the years there was talk about maybe it being restarted, but it just never happened.

And then, a couple weeks ago, DC made an announcement - 2010 will be the year Teen Titans: Games is finished.

Hunh. I'm not AS excited about it now. It's from a period where not all the characters were at their most interesting. And times have changed. Will a story intended for 1987 be as cool in 2010!? Are we going to get sick of Danny Chase all over again? (He's the dorky red-head kid in the trench coat).

Eh, who knows. But at a whopping 120 pages, and sporting George Perez's amaaaaaazing art, it's GOT to be good! It'll take some of the characters back to a time when I think they felt more like what I think they should be like - some of them have been changed too much over the years.

I dunno. It'll be exciting. I don't know if it'll be a great read - we'll see. But I tell ya what - the week it comes out, I'm gonna be busy reading and combing through all that great artwork! Let's hope it doesn't let me down!

Coming this summer!

It looks like things could get really interesting this summer...

Mary sold veggies to a couple people out of her garden all summer long last year. She and a couple other ladies (eh hm Tina!) bugged me to join forces with Mary, and take on more customers.

So this summer? Mary and I will have somewhere between 6 and 12 customers on a subscription basis, getting weekly bundles of food from us. That number of customers depends on whether the people are getting full or half shares.

That teaser above is just a bit of the brochure I've been working on with all the details, although it's already changed since I took that screenshot.

It's exciting that I'll get to help other people try veggies that maybe they've never worked with before. I'm guessing many have never cooked kale, swiss chard, leeks or tomatillos - all things that I hope to have enough of to include in the shares. There may be some veggies where there's just not enough of a particular type to include for six others, so they'll just be for me and Brett! But by taking money from these people, I'm guaranteeing them that, between me and Mary, we WILL provide them with a good sized amount of food each and every week from early June to mid October.

This should prove to be a very interesting summer!

I said Brrrr, it's cold out there!

And I'm not even sure you'll find Toro's in the atmosphere when it drops down to 3F out there!

(You DO get the reference, right?)

RIP Zelda

Sad news - it seems one of the pivotal characters from one of my all-time favorite movies, passed away today. Let's see if this picture clues you in.

No? Ok, how about "Go intooooo the liiiiiight Carol Anne"??

To be honest, I didn't even remember her character's name was Tangina in Poltergeist, but I didn't have to know the name to remember her. This woman really added a sense of "OH SHIT!" to the already growing craziness in Poltergeist. Was she your friend? Was she there to help you? Was she going to have your displaced daughter crossover into the white light just to get rid of the demon, rather than help bring your daughter back to you? Was she going to have you jump into a glowy closet with a rope tied around you, and have you fall out of the living room ceiling covered in...meat jello stuff? Mmmmm....yeah, probably.

I don't know that I saw her in too many other movies, but just hearing about her has made me want to watch Poltergeist again real soon! RIP Zelda Rubinstein.

Old fun is new again...and other stuff

Yeah yeah yeah, I've been baaaad again and have gotten really behind on blogging. I promise (again) to try and keep up. Honest! We're getting to that time of year where more and more often I'm sitting here at the computer thinking "I'm bored...what should I be doing?" And the things that come to mind aren't always fun (cleaning, which we did a bunch of this weekend), or are downright frustrating.

One of those frustrating things was finally sit down and get the damn weather station working again. I was soooo excited when Brett got it for me for a bday gift almost two years ago! And once we got it all set up it was a blast!

And then it started having problems. It just didn't want to continue to report data reliably. It was always glitching out. And when you have to go through something like 12 screws just to get to the battery pack/reset button for the rain gauge, well, trust me, you give up on resetting the thing after a few attempts.

But I've known this was a problem for quite some time, and I've wished I could geek out on the weather data, and yet it wasn't there. Why? Because I didn't fix it.

So that's what I did a couple weeks ago - I trekked out in the snow and brought the whole system in, swapped out the batteries (they were still working!), cleaned out the spider nests, hit the resets, made sure it was all working here in the house, and repositioned the parts outside, closer to the house.

And lo and behold - it all worked!

(If you're well past bored with this weather station story, scroll down. I promise, there's other stuff covered in this entry - you'll know it when you see it!)

And then the anemometer stopped working again. (That's the spinny part that reports wind gusts)

WTF!??!

Well, this time it seemed it had frozen in place. I guess there was enough snow/ice inside it, and that thawed while I had it in cleaning/working on it, that when I took it back out all that moisture (sorry Sharon) froze up and filled the space between the base and the "spinny part" and locked it all up. I fixed it, moved it further back in the yard - and it worked again!

And then it stopped again.

Grrrr...

So I had Brett use the phone's intercom system with me - he sat here at the computer while I ran to the backyard and moved it five feet closer to the house.

It worked again!

And then the next day it stopped again. MF!!

Was just out there again - seems it froze up with all our rain storms and then the sudden drop in temps yesterday (no really - check it out!). So I knocked the ice loose and, for now, it's working. Again.

We'll see how it does. I'm not holding my breath.

So yeah, my "yay I'm back to the blog!" has me typing out a butt-long yammerfest on my weather system. Did you find that exciting!??!

Other exciting news:
  • It looks like Mary (from work) and I will be setting up our own CSA this year! Yipes! (What's a CSA?) Exciting, but intimidating. She sold veggies from her garden to two coworkers all last year - each week taking a basket of veggies in to each of them. Well, the crew at work talked me into joining in with her, and instead of two customers, we'll have six. That's right, in addition to feeding me and Brett, I'll be feeding the equivalent of three (six divided by the two of us) families this summer. (Ok, that might be over dramatizing it). Let's hope this goes well!

  • I see we have NEW FOLLOWERS to the blog. That's really cool! So in addition to ju from Brasil and Nik_the_Greek who both commented awhile back, there's now Dyl from the UK who might be checking in. I have to say I'm loving the international spin on the blog followers. Thanks for joining gang, and I'll try to keep it interesting.

  • TV time - my dad got us hooked on Showtime's Weeds recently, and I have to say we are LOVING the show. Who would've thought a show about a widowed housewife selling marijuana could be so entertaining? Seriously, we're considering buying one of the undeveloped lots in our neighborhood and building a house just to grow weed! (I'm TOTALLY kidding - neither of us has ever smoked marijuana, nor would I know a thing about growing/selling it). While sure, the show implies you get to see a lot of bare asses, I'm afraid there's also too much scary shit and killing going on for my taste. Pass!

  • I think we're going to get to try a "noodle shop" sometime soon! Well, sorta. I don't know if Teahouse Noodles in Cleveland REEEEALLY counts as a noodle shop. We hear about them all the time in cooking shows, etc. Sounds like they're huge in the big cities, and we would love to visit the UK where it sounds like curry shops are to be found on every corner. But here in NE Ohio we have a hard time finding these cool sounding places. Teahouse Noodles actually has two locations, both in Cleveland (not sure yet which we'll hit). I saw it highly recommended from a former KSU Library employee on Facebook, and then a friend of his also raves about it, and the web site sure intrigues me. Mmmm...as does the menu! Yeah, definitely gonna have to check this place out!

  • It's time to start sprouting things in the basement! Since leeks take so long, they got seeded a week and a half ago. I also decided to try some parsley and various lettuce, although it might be a bit early for lettuce. The good news is the two varieties of leeks, plus at least two of the 5 (?) varieties of lettuce I seeded HAVE sprouted already. Yay! The gardening season is here. Well, not really...we had an inch of snow last nite, and I'm sure there's plenty more of that to come... But some of these things take A LOT of time to grow before they're ready to be set outside.

Alright, that's it for now. Brett's out to an evening doctor's appointment, and suggested I do a "fish night" here at the house while he'll be out. Brett hates fish, doesn't like the smell of it, etc...and so I don't normally cook it. If I cook it for our dinner, I'll ALSO need to cook up something for his dinner that doesn't involve the seafood. Plus why subject him to the smell? So I think I'm gonna go cook up a tilapia fillet and a handful of scallops, maybe steam some broccoli and cook up some sort of seasoned rice pack (yes, it's cheating) and settle down with the Two Fat Ladies old british cooking shows I got in via Netflix before he gets home. I need to get some designy computery work done this evening, but that can be later tonite I think.

Green Lantern's gotta have a Hector Hammond

One of Green Lantern's longtime enemies has been Hector Hammond - and it looks like the upcoming live-action movie now has an actor set to play the role. This guy, Peter Saarsgard, was apparently in Shattered Glass and Jarhead, neither of which I've seen. Now he WAS in The Skeleton Key and The Cell, but I don't recall much about either of those movies.

Who is Hector Hammond? Well, he's a guy with a grudge for Green Lantern, and he pretty much just sits around limp with a giant head (no no, that's not hydroencephalitis). And you know when someone's got a ginormous head in comics, that means they've got brain powers, right? In Hector's case, he's got various telepathic and telekinetic abilities. Here's an "old school" image of him from the 80s.

And here's an updated version of Hector - bigger head and all. Oh, and as you can see, he's sometimes prone to drooling these days.

Time to change the Spidey!

Regarding making a new Spiderman movie: "Mike Fleming and I have just confirmed that Sony Pictures decided today to reboot the Spider-Man franchise after Sam Raimi pulled out of Spider-Man 4 because he felt he couldn't make its summer release date and keep the film's creative integrity. This means that Raimi and the cast including star Tobey Maguire are out. There will be no Spider-Man 4. Instead, the studio will focus on a reboot script by Jamie Vanderbilt with a new director and a new cast. All this took place today at meeting on the lot today."

Well, the last one tanked so bad I guess this is for the best!

Yes, we really do have a Moxie!

More than one person has questioned whether or not we actually have THREE cats. Well - here's proof:

That was her in the lower right, next to Simon. Did you blink? Oops, you missed her! And that means Doogie gets to come lick out whatever she left in her bowl of tuna treats.

Here's her close up - and yes, she's often glaring.

Doing a little dance...

And finally just standing there looking cute.

I'm usually the only one who can play with her very much. Even if she's growling and hissing at the dog I can blow raspberries on her belly and give her hugs and kisses - she doesn't take it out on me. Brett can pet her and scritch her a bit... And we were totally shocked when she came out the last time Sharon and Andy were over, and actually let Sharon pet her! I bet that never happens again. I sure hope it does!

We interrupt this blog for an important news flash!

So we knew yesterday that the snow storm was supposed to unload A LOT of snow on us....and we had a nice amount fall yesterday afternoon. But then it tapered off....long enough for me to take this picture out back with zero snow falling!

When it was time to get up this morning, I heard my phone beep with a text message. Turns out Kent's main campus was actually delaying opening until 10am! How crazy - we're always the LAST of all our regionals to close for snow, and often other universities in the area announce closings before us. Turns out NONE of the other schools were opening late. Brett went off to work, I went back to bed and set the alarm for 830. Just before the alarm went off, another beep. Kent Main was closed for the entire day. SWEEEEET! (And since then, there's been more msgs that all the regionals are closing at noon)

Here's what things were looking like out back once the sun came up. Turns out we DID get a bit more snow over night!

And as you can see - no more snow's falling! The roads supposedly aren't all THAT bad...so it's odd that we're closed, but I'm not griping! Turns out there's supposed to be some serious lake effect snow kicking in later today...so we COULD get another six inches.

Check out this junco sitting on the spruce out back...

And a cardinal in the Crimson King maple...

I have to say I'm LOVING the addition of the split-rail fence - it adds some character to the backyard, and looks really nice with the snow on it. I look forward to it weathering over the years, and losing some of that "new" look/color it's sporting right now.

Here's the spruce in the front yard - maybe I'll wait til all this snow thaws before I get the balls/lights off the tree. ;-)

The bird feeders are VERY popular today. There's a starling or grackle at the suet feeder, with a cardinal waiting his turn. And then just hanging out on the fence is a male downy woodpecker. He's probably hoping the other two will hurry up so he can go get a snack.

Here's a male goldfinch (not looking very vibrant in the winter) and a female cardinal sitting in the variegated dappled willow. I always think the chubby female cardinals look like they're smiling about something.

I was just talking with someone the other day about how I hadn't seen the pileated wood pecker in AAAAGES (like not at all this summer/fall/winter) - sure, off in the distance, and I can hear her sometimes, but hadn't seen her up close.

So I'm sitting there in the living room when there's all this noise out there (you can hear the sound here... http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Pileated_Woodpecker/sounds ), and just barely moved fast enough to get these pictures! She's a bit on the big-size for my small feeders!

I'm assuming it's a female - I don't actually know for sure.

She didn't stay around very long - so either something scared her, or she just didn't care for what I'm offering in the suet feeders. I'm not sure what else I could put out that would attract her...maybe she's just picky.

Happy snow day!

Damn you, Brett!

After Christmas we really shouldn't go out and spend money on ourselves, right? I mean, we just did all that gift buying for others. Well, ok, maybe if we were given Christmas money to spend on ourselves it's a little more ok...but really, do you really have to take me to Penzey's the day after Christmas!? That's like a kid in a candy store!

A tasty, tasty candy store with lots of good smelling things! (Including things like all the ground spicy peppers that set me off with a sneezing fit. I'm sure once we were gone the employees threw everything away and started their food displays over, even though I sneezed into my elbow!)

Here it comes!

Things are gonna start getting real interesting!

And they're gonna start doing it soon!

How big is Tucker?

(and he knew where I was going with this when I took the picture - check out that "F-you" look he's giving me!)

Tucker's so big...

...you can hide a 14 lb Simon behind him!!! (Go back and look - you'll see both tails)

And yes, we all know it's totally disgusting when cats get up on tables. Except 1) if you have cats you know you can't win this war, and 2) we don't eat off've this table - I promise. But just to be safe, I told Doogie to tell the cats to get off the table, so of course he thought that meant HE got to put HIS paws on the table (no, he's not allowed to do that, and no, he doesn't normally put his feet on the table.)

Seriously good!

While off on the winter break from work, I had what may have been the tastiest thing I've had in a long time.

I have a confession - I love McDonald's Steak, Egg and Cheese Bagels. I rarely ever get them. They're supposed to be really bad for you. But hey, don't knock it til you try it!

Since we still had leftover rib eye roast from Christmas (more on that later) that was soooooo tender, I decided to try an experiment:

Ooooh yeah baby, that was some seriously good stuff! Toasted bagle. Thin slices of juicy, tender rib eye roast reheated gently in a skillet. A little horseradish (not on McDonald's version) smeared on the bagel. Some scrambled egg. And freshly grated cheddar (I'd even settle for a slice of American cheese).

This thing was so good that I made another one the next day! Is your mouth watering yet?! (I only wish I took better pictures of it!)

When it snows...

...and when that's combined with over a week off from work, well, one can't help but want to go out and play!

Long before we had the week off between Christmas and New Years from work (not to mention the days off for Christmas itself), I'd been telling Doogie I would take him out for a hike at one of the local parks. And all that time I was making promises to him, I kept hoping there'd be snow.

And then it rained ALL CHRISTMAS DAY!

Thankfully, the day or two after Christmas, we got hit with snow! YAY!

So bright and early (aka around 11:00am) Monday morning, after Brett had gone to work and it was just me and the critters, I had some breakfast knowing Doogie had completely forgotten I was going to take him to the park ("forgotten" because he really doesn't understand that much English). He was all excited when I grabbed the leash and his harness and we piled into the car.

And booooy was he antsy for that drive - he knew we had to be going somewhere fun.

Unfortunately, dogs that don't understand "it's going to take us just a little while to get there - calm down" get a bit high strung. See:

His eyes were clearly about to pop outta his head.

Anyhow, we finally got to the park. Now there's multiple paths you can choose to take - and the last time we came to this park Brett had us take one of the branches that ended out being the shorter hike. So of course you know what I had planned for me and Doogie:

Yup, that's right, 2.2 miles. Sure it was COOOOLD out (hint: snow), and sure I hadn't gone for a long walk/hike in ages, but I knew the excitement of snow + nature would keep us going! And so we got started...

The only issue - with a dog, you pretty much have to sniff and/or pee on everything in nature. Uh oh - this was gonna be a bit longer than I expected!

Oh well, if he gets to sniff things or pee on them, I get to take pretty pictures - like taking notice of all the different textures to the bark, and how the snow accentuates the texture.

Unfortunately, Doogie doesn't share my interests...

"LEEEET'S GO!!!!!"

Sure it might sound a bit silly, but there were some seriously breath-taking views at the park. The same places that are really pretty or relaxing in summer and fall just take on a totally different look when covered in snow!

"Ok, seriously - are you really gonna take pictures the whole time!?"

This tree is leaning out over the pond in the previous nature pic....it sure has a menacing look here...

Same tree, different view. Now it looks old and wise to me...

This tree here looks like it was in a hurry to get somewhere - and like maybe it didn't know where that was.

More tree texture.

I thought there were two cool things really close to each other. If I'd given it more thought, I would've lined them up better so it would've looked like the evergreen tree was lit up with red lights.

Now how can you not accept this invitation...

Doogie wasn't too sure what to think about bridges going over meandering creeks...

Another bend in the path.

When I told him to sit on the bench, I didn't actually think he'd try to follow through - AFTER going under the bench. That didn't quite work out.

But hey, the snow was tasty!

Looking in one direction, there's a path just begging you to continue onward...

...yet turn and look to the side, and the message is "stay out!"

I love this area of the park with all the skinny, tall, straight tree that have almost no branches. And even cooler is this one in the middle that just doesn't quite fit in...

One of these things is not like the others...

Another view of the big tree and all it's skinny friends.

By this point we'd already walked about 3/4 of the path and Doogie, being a little less enthusiastic, was more open to suggestions like "sit and I'll take your picture."

Yup, I really like this area...although I feel like there's a subliminal message to go buy a Big Mac in here.

Continuing on our way...

Trust me, the hills the path covered weren't all as subtle as this one.

This isn't actually part of the path, and probably wouldn't be as noticeable with all the leaves on the trees. It's about half as wide as the walking path... Hm.

Woods on the left, pond on the right - a good place to stop and take in the view.

Do not go running straight forward here. I'm pretty sure that pond that looks more like a field isn't frozen enough to walk on!

Nice contrast in colors here.

Something about these skinny little creeks just exudes peace and tranquility.

Annnnnd now the walk is about done. This is the awkwardly-spaced stone walkway down to the parking lot. Sure looks pretty, doesn't it?

One more view of the creek.

I was trying to get one of those cool photos where you almost can't tell what's real and what's the reflection, but things just weren't working out.

Oh well, time to head back to the car. Unfortunately, because there's a sledding hill nearby, they actually had the road to the parking lot blocked off, so we had to park at a nearby lot and walk a short ways.

Doogie, and I, of course, chose NOT to follow the road back and followed someone else's tracks instead - way more fun!

Then again - there's a lot of cold openness out there...let's not veer too far off the path back to the car.

On the way back we stopped to watch the kids sledding down the hill.

That was serious torture for the dog. Do you know how much he wanted to go play with those kids?

Oh well, after that long hike we were pooped. We came back home and just chilled out the rest of the afternoon. We definitely have to do that again - next time we'll do it when we can drag Brett along!
