And remember that the window of opportunity greatly shrinks the colder it is.

No way can I reach that bag of knitting way out past the toes.

Also - first day we've turned on the fireplace, which also means that "first fire of the season" stink as it burns off any dust, cobwebs etc... Daisy is in heaven - she loves the fire.

Not as many gourds as some years, but this mix of seeds were for bigger varieties than I usually grow, plus there was a lot of competition with the cucumbers and weeds.

I remember my Grandma Catherine would make them up to take out to Grandpa and the hired hands working out in the fields as part of lunch (often with other yummy stuff, all packed in the trunk of the car). Grandma Dorothy (dad's mom) would also make them - and I'm sure every family had subtle variations to the recipe.

I haven't made, or had, bierochs in years. Brett doesn't love cabbage, and would usually turn down anything that included it in a noticeable way. Plus they're a bit of work - making the dough, cooking the filling, assembling, rising, etc... But then I pulled this beauty out of the garden this past weekend...

...and I knew I had to do something worthy with it! After some searching around, I settled on this recipe: http://www.balticmaid.com/2014/03/bierocks-volga-german-meat-pastries/

I worried a little bit when I sliced into it - I already had made the dough the afternoon before, and had it out of the fridge coming back to room temp so it could rise a bit more. Then I sliced into what felt like a really hefty, dense cabbage only to find the core was a bit loose and chunky. Would I not be able to get enough shredded cabbage for the recipe?

Good news! While the recipe is a bit vague on how much cabbage you need (some recipes call for a specific number of cups, while this just called for "about half of a medium cabbage") - I felt I had plenty once I started slicing it.

It took me a little while to get into the groove of filling/forming the bierochs. The recipe has you cut the dough into fourths, and then each of those blobs into fourths. My first four were a bit ugly. Each group of four improved - here's my last four. I finally found what worked best was to roll the dough out, put on the blobs of filling, use a brush wet with water to moisten the outside edges and then a + sign through the middle, and then cut with pizza roller. Cutting first and then moistening edges just made extra work, and was often more sloppy.

Look at them all gathering on the cookie sheets!

After they were assembled I let them rise, covered, in the warm oven for about 25 minutes - until nice and puffy - then I brushed them with milk while the oven came up to temperature.

About halfway through their baking time I flipped/rotated the cookie sheets to ensure more even cooking.

Yummmmmm.... Good ol' comfort food, which takes me back to my childhood!

And the verdict? Brett even liked them! I honestly hadn't planned on them being our dinner, or him even eating one for that matter. But he reminded me he eats cabbage when I put it in beef and veggie soup (it cooks down a LOOONG time in that), and that he would try them. Granted, he mixed up some sort of English gravy/sauce powder for dipping his in (cheesy sauce maybe?), but he said it was really good! He was really impressed with the bread dough, and said I should do more things with it.

Right now all of them are packaged up in the fridge. Some will go into the freezer at home, and I figure I'll stash some in the work freezer so I can pull one out to nuke for lunch every now and then.

I don't remember if it's been a year or more since I made it, but we loved that stuff.

Knowing a three day weekend was coming up, and we had no plans to go anywhere or do anything, I checked with Ami at Breakneck Acres and, sure enough, she has frozen stewing hens! I stopped in my way home after work the other day and she had my requested twelve birds waiting in a box for me.

Two days later and they're still frozen solid - sitting in the basement fridge for such a short time was not long enough for them to start thawing.

I started with adding seven large carrots, half a head of celery, maybe five halved onions, one large and a couple small heads of garlic, a palmful of peppercorns, maybe six cloves, and a good shake off salt into the large stock pot. Didn't bother peeling anything - the carrots and celery got ends cut off and a quick scrub, and the onions and garlic got the loosest skins removed, and the root ends cut off.

Then it was a game of frozen chicken Tetris - I know I've been able to get six birds in the stock pot before, although I think they were thawed, and their legs were stretched out more. These are a bit more boxy.

As you can see, after some shuffling around I got all but maybe and inch or two under water. As the bottom ones thaw, we'll use the potato masher to push the birds down more. I seriously doubt there's any risk of us getting sick from raw birds out of the water for a bit - they're going to simmer all day, and then will be pressure canned with really high heat.

It cost me $87 for the 12 birds (priced $7ea). She says each bird will weigh at least 2.5lbs. Maybe she picked out big birds for me? The first six weigh...

3.51
3.17
3.27
3.46
3.77
2.62

I'll have to do a final total and some math to see what they actually come out to per pound, see how many quarts of stock we get, and compare that to the boxed stocks we sometimes buy. Guaranteed this'll taste so much better!

The most successful slicer is clearly chefs choice orange. In still getting a few others like black Krim, green zebra, stupice, brandywine and lucky cross. I suppose the decreasing production of those at least makes the quantities manageable!

Cucumbers are pretty much done.

Okra is still producing slow but constant.

Didn't find any zucchini today.

Pulled some peaches, but they're very firm. The white faced yellow jackets don't want me to have the good ones.

Plus it's pretty much guaranteed at least a couple will decide to rot. There's nothing much stinkier from the garden than rotting onions.

The acrylic, lots of seaming, cabled cardigan I never finished after melting some of it before attempting a poor seaming job a year or two ago kinda turned me off.

So now what am i going to try? Fingering weight yarn for a sweater! Because nothing says doable like super fine yarn that's gonna take a long time.

Oh yeah, it's also gonna have a ton of stranded color work!

I'm just doing a quick posting about it here. I've finally spun up all the yarn (Brett did one for me - it's the looser-caked dark blue), and started knitting a gauge swatch last night. So far the recommended size US5 needles appear to be getting gauge, which seems weird 1) for first attempt, and 2) because the fabric seems a little loose. Hey, what do I know...

Here's just some pics of the yarn colors. More details later IF this progresses...

This afternoon there were at least two new pears on the ground. One was really chewed into by the bugs, but this one was perfect. I figured there was no way it was going to be good - either rock hard, super mushy inside, or full of bugs.

Turns out it was perfect! So good!

Now to get out there and pick pears and peaches. I figure I'll aim for morning when hopefully there aren't wasps all over them.

I really need to start canning tomatoes this weekend!

The apple isn't quite ripe yet, but the peach? Mmm! It's not as rich as the orangey ones, but it's still great!

The green zebras are having a rough time this year - really bad with the blossom end rot. They're rarely very healthy plants for me...

The grapes are my first - are there are going to be very few. Kinda tough skins. Some are a little seedy. I'm guessing they started ripening this past week and I didn't realize it - either the critters have gotten a number of them, or they have just been dropping.

Now - what do I do with one okra?

The stupice tomatoes are definitely early producers! They're really juicy, bordering on watery, but they at least have flavor - more than early girl!

Starting to get paste/sauce tomatoes. Also got more chefs choice orange tomatoes this week.

The cukes and zukes are nuts this year! So many of them!

I was mowing the lawn this past weekend, and realized I was finally seeing more bees flying around, dipping into the clover blossoms, etc. I'd been worried because I really hadn't seen many bees yet this year.... Now we seem to be making up for it because they're all over the place - good!!

Since I don't have a ton of blooms in the flower beds at the moment, and because they were clearly enjoying the clover (had to keep stopping and waiting for one to fly away while I was mowing), I decided to leave a small patch of blooms for them near the back of the yard....

They're not just loving the clover. The onions are in bloom - and they looooove allium blooms. I remove the garlic scapes, which would bloom and take energy from the developing parts underground. You'd think you use the same plans with onions, but I don't think I've ever heard of anyone removing the onion flowers, so I don't...

Wow, the garden is REALLY cranking out the goodies this summer!! We went from kinda sparse to "uh oh, what am I going to do with all of this" in the blink of an eye....

Having said that, the raspberries aren't producing crazy amounts all at one time like they can in some years, but I figure there's a few factors here. I didn't heavily fertilize the plants during their development, and I feel like my dad has always said they love to be fertilized. I just went through a 50 lb bag of fertilizer from Ohio Earth Food the other day, and only after I emptied the last little trickle around the base of a peach tree did I realize I forgot to give any to the raspberries. Also, it's been reeeeeally dry. I've actually watered the raspberries a few times - not something I normally have to do! And finally - the lower quantity of raspberries right now SHOULD be a good thing that I forced to happen! I pruned the raspberries this spring into three different heights. The third of the bed closest to the house was pruned down to maybe 8" or so, the middle third was given maybe a couple feet of height, and the last third (which is producing right now) just got the dead ends pruned off. So HOPEFULLY I'll get a longer harvest, which more manageable quantities at any one time. Most will go to the freezer for jelly making later, but I can have small snackable portions as I want them, and hopefully over a longer stretch of time!

The basil is also going gangbusters! I've been pinching out blooming tips, but we haven't really used a ton of it yet. This time I decided to pick a big boquet of it, and then pick all the leaves off to load up the dehydrator trays. Even after about 5 hrs the leaves still weren't fully dry, so they're getting a little more time even as I type this. They don't look as attractive as storebought dried basil - we'll see how it turns out.

Then there's the beans. OMG the beans. With the picking you see here, I had almost 7lbs worth stashed in the fridge from just the last week!! I ended out taking the oldest bag, cutting them to about 2" pieces, blanching for 3 minutes, drying, and then bagging/freezing into several quart freezer bags. We haven't been fond of home canned or frozen beans before - at least not as a side dish - but at this size they should be great for adding to soups later.

Also a heavy producer this year? Zucchini/summer squash. This is just one afternoon's picking. Just the day before I'd unloaded about this many on coworkers. Annnnd the cucumbers are starting up. There are more blooms on the cukes this year than I think I've ever seen on cuke vines before. They're NUTS! As you can see, even though I've been checking their growth, a couple snuck past me....oops.

The crocosmia are blooming in full effect! I really need to do a better job of providing support for these guys before they get so big each summer... I love how they look at all different stages - from looking like a weird ladder as they start to extend their buds, to bigger and more attention getting when in full bloom. Here's different flowers, at various stages of opening up.
