As you can see here (and will see in other pictures), the rumbo pumpkins are crawling alllll over the place! This teepee has scarlett runner beans (seeds collected from last year's beans) and pattypan squash planted in/around it. That's all I planned to grow up it. Instead the pumpkin, which is probably 10+ feet away, is crawling towards the sky!!
I'm not sure what this is! I THINK maybe they're pattypans of a variety I've never grown before, and left them on the vine because they were more conical in shape?? I remember buying a last minute pattypan seed packet at Kriegers one day - maybe this is what I got?? Heck, I better start picking 'em smaller than nearly football-size, hunh?
Part of the tomato patch - I think we've got black krim on the left and black cherry on the right? I can't WAIT for these to ripen!
These are from a freebie packet I received - Hard Rock. I didn't expect them to take on this paste-tomato shape! Double-checking Totally Tomatoes, I guess this is an ok shape and they shouldn't get much longer...
We wouldn't have our gardens without these little helpers, which is why I HOPE we'll be able to find a new home a little more out in the country so I can have 2-3 bee hives and not worry what the neighbors think.
Might be hard to believe looking at this picture here, but I expect this kinda ugly yellow guy will be turning into one of the Rumbo pumpkins, which were super popular last year!
While you can't see any tomatoes in this picture, it's the Fourth of July variety a coworker gave me. What you CAN see are the rumbo's crawling out over the tomatoes!! I'm starting to cut back the rumbo vines, as they're taking over the place!
These are either Sun Golds or Sun Sugars - I need to remember to check the tags! Good, and the first of this years tomatoes to ripen for me, but so far we're not finding them to be AS sweet as advertised.
I WISH these were the Green Zebras - then they'd practically be ripe! But they're Red Zebras, and look like they have a ways to go...
So far this is the only sunshine squash that's shown up on the long vine - and it looks like it's ready earlier than I would've expected! Just waiting for the stem to turn brown so I can pick it.
Left teepee has lemon cucumbers (which I've never had before) - lots of vines and flowers, but so far no cukes. I direct seeded these late though, so no complaints. And the right teepee has snow peas and sugar snap peas....
View of the garden - you can actually see it's full width here, but to the untrained eye it just looks like a mass of green. There are the edges of tomato cages on the left and right, and you can see the teepees down in the distance in the middle. The big leafy green middle section? Oh, that's my dumb plan to have a narrow walkway down between squash and pumpkins this year. H'yeah, riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. Lesson learned.

Are you sure that squash is a patty pan? It kinda looks like an acorn to me.

Yeah, I took a break between things today and took advantage of Blogger being in a good mood. Seemed uploads were VERY quick, no delays in posting, etc... Sorry for the glut. Maybe I should create a bunch of entries when it's like this and just keep them in edit/draft mode to throttle back the stuff?
And nope, didn't grow any acorn squash. I also thought it looked a little like an acorn squash - altho I grew those a couple years ago, and they were definitely shaped more like a traditional acorn squash at this point. Hm, maybe I got a pack of yellow acorn squash somehow?? Weird, hunh?
I save posts for future posting sometimes. That or I'll load the pictures and then think about the text for a while.
You may have gotten a stray seed in a package or the fruit your seed came from was cross-pollinated from another field. Look at the freakshow my Hubbard is producing.
Are those Squash Bugs? I find them on my tomatoes sometimes. Kind of gross looking. Found my first Japanese Beetles this weekend too. It's a never ending battle.
Looks great though, I wish I had some pumpkins to admire.
Squash bugs are vaguely shield shaped, and sort of a grayish brown color. And they love to do it. Right there while you're watching 'em!
My beans were covered in little yellow fuzzy larval forms of something - potato beetles? Not sure...need to do a little research. And I came across one incredibly stunning bug, very shiny, with strips running from tip to tail in various earth tone shades. Wish I would've gotten a picture of it - could've made interesting jewelry for a woman!
Is it bad of me to lust for green tomato chutney when I see your little darlings awaiting ripening? Yes, yes, yes - fresh, ripe tomatoes are a wonderful thing. But mmmmmm, chutney!
The stripey one sounds like a Colorado Potato Beetle.
Peter: I have a green tomato sitting on the patio table - found it in the grass the other day. Not sure if the storms blew it off, or if grounds crews or the neighbor girls bumped it off. I haven't had much luck making fried green tomatoes I love, so it's kind of wasted on me at the moment.
Steven: I Googled and, yup, you're right! Very attractive...but up to no good. And it looks like the worse culprit in the beans is the Mexican Bean Beetle - they're all over, devouring the leaves and scarring the beans. What a mess.
