Each fall the Metro Parks have the Fall Hiking Spree...they list 14 local hiking trails and if you hike 8 of them you get a small metal badge. If it's your first year, you also get a hiking stick to nail the badges to (we got ours two years ago).
We really haven't made much time to go hiking this year, and we're about halfway through the Hiking Spree dates...so time to get moving!
We went today - hitting The Gorge. It's about 15 minutes from us, is only about 1.8 miles, and is level 3 in difficulty (the top level - includes lots of rocky paths, changes in elevation, etc). We've done the Gorge enough times anyhow - no biggie. But it's been awhile, and with the freshly fallen leaves and some slightly-lacking signage, we weren't quite sure where the "turn back towards the parking lot" area was - some of the paths are a little vague (hey, it's a level 3!)
So we wandered off the path a little - NO PROBLEM - plenty of that goes on here. Except as I was crawling over some rocks and stooping under a fallen tree, I stood up too soon. Clobbered the shit outta my head, saw stars, had major head pain, and had to sit for a couple minutes. Had a ballcap on, so that protected me from most of the bark scrapings. Feared blood would come pouring down (heads bleed like stuck pigs, right?), but nothing bad like that happened. We continued on our way with me sporting a major headache, stinging on top of my head, and feeling like I've been grinding my teeth for a week.
Got home and Brett checked out the top of my head. First I thought he was joking when he started wincing and making ouchie noises... Turns out the top of my head looks like someone hammered a cheese grater on top of it. (Ok, I'm probably over-exaggerating a tiny bit, but I can't see the top, and Brett doesn't usually make those kinds of faces/noises unless it's bad). Hours later the top of my head is still weeping, but not really bleeding...just oozy, and stings like hell even after a few cleanings and some neosporin (gooey hair!).
Ibuprofin's not doing much for the headache yet, so I'm going to bed early!
Hopefully you can enjoy the photo album from today's hike here...

Good photo of you, there, by the way!
I hope your head feels better very soon :)
Thanks! I was pretending I was going to dive off one of the cliffs. No water below - just more rocks, trees, leaves all over the paths, etc. Wouldn't have been very comfortable. Might've been better than smashing my head against a tree! ;-)
