While the cats are sleeping...

...THIS landed on the bird feeders. There were a lot of times later in the day after this guy landed that none of the other birds came back. I think they're afraid for their lives (rightfully so!). If you know anything about birds, help me identify this - falcon or hawk or something else? I uploaded the super jumbo size pic (which you should hopefully see when clicking on this smaller one)

Some sort of falcon, I can't find my Sibley's or I'd look it up.

I just sent this picture to the "bird person" in our Conservation dept. The photo was a little grainy but she's pretty sure it is a Northern Goshawk. It generally feeds on other birds. So, your bird feeder really is feeding ALL the birds!

Cool - thanks Kelli! Comparing the pic I took with this one, I'm guessing she's right:

The old ornithology prof from here on campus (I had his Bio Principle I and Genetics courses) retired and now works at the garden center I go to. I should start pestering him with all these "ooh, and what's this bird in my backyard? and this one??"

I'm pretty good about identifying most of them I think, but was uncertain about this one because I didn't get a good view and, as you can see, didn't get a good picture of him/her.

Thanks again!
