Signs of spring?

Signs of spring #1: More critters. What's this? Haven't seen this one before...

Oh lovely. Possums out in the daylight? Isn't that a sign of rabies? Maybe not. He was up visiting the dropped seeds under the bird feeder, plus an old squash my visiting mom had thrown out for the birds. (The birds haven't touched the squash) And then? He bee-lined for the compost.

Dammit- just what I need rooting around in the compost. Thing is, I haven't seen it back in the compost, just under the bird feeders, and only at night now.

Signs of spring #2: Massive snow melts. We've had plenty of foggy days here as all the snow from a week and a half ago has started melting. As I type this is down to 38 (was higher earlier), and there's a chance of an inch of snow tonite, but it's been pouring since yesterday, and many areas of Ohio are flooding. Luckily I don't think we'll have to worry about that here - I checked the man-made pond out back and it's got excellent drainage.

You've got to admit this sure is pretty, hunh?

I would normally consider this very pretty too, but to be honest, I, the snow-lover, am pretty much sick of it at this point. I'm ready for warm, sunny weather where I can walk around barefoot in a grassy yard without worrying about sinking.

Signs of spring #3: Ah, now this is more like it!

I was honestly worried many of the bulbs I planted last fall would rot out from the pour draining in our yard (it's going to take time for the clay to give way to good soil). Looks like I'm in luck - the bulbs are starting to pop up!

Signs of spring #4: The beasts are getting frisky! And they're demanding some outside time for fresh air...

Oh joy. As I'm wrapping up this blog entry, the pouring rain on the roof got oddly quiet. I see it's just turned into big, white fluffy flakes of snow.

More snow.

Sigh.

You're MORE than welcome to eat him/her.

You can also have the new squirrel that found my bird feeders. I bet you could make some wild dishes with our wild life! ;-)
