After first putting some screw holes in the deck railing, and then dealing with some serious indecision issues, I took an informal poll amongst friends - should the new deck planters be:
A: On the inside of the deck, where we'll be able to appreciate their beauty more while sitting out on the deck, even if they take up space and limit "lean over and peer at the yard" locations...
...or B) on the outside of the deck, which would make more sense, is probably how they're intended, and won't block movement and entertaining on the deck, yet they won't be as visible while on the deck. Sure, they'll look good while I'm out in the yard, but what about when lounging with Brett and friends?
As you can see, after I screwed in the first one, I decided to temporarily zip-tie the rest in place, and plopped flats of pansies in them, to give me a better feel for how each way may look. And I asked friends what their thoughts were.
The majority of folks felt they should go on the outside, where they wouldn't be in the way of sitting/partying on the deck. There WERE a number of comments about how they'd be more appreciated on the deck if attached to the inside of the railing, but now that all is said and done, I'm glad I shifted them to the outside.
Sure, right now they don't look so great...
...but I just filled them with plants yesterday. Give them time to fill in, grow, start to vine all over, etc - and I'm sure they'll look great!
