Red, white and blue

Happy Independence Day! What's red, white and blue and in our yard a whole lot more lately?

Ok, maybe it's too hard to tell - it's a bluebird!! I started hearing this male singing in the backyard last week - it was an interesting song I wasn't familar with, and saw this guy sitting on the back of the neighbor's house, just singing at the top of his lungs. So I grabbed the bluebird nest box my brother made me last year (which wasn't up because I don't have any trees that can handle it, and hadn't decided where I wanted to put a post), and tried hooking it on one of the posts for the cucumber trellis. Voila! He liked it!

Both he AND a female have been spending a lot of time going in and out of the nest. I don't see them carrying TOO much in with them - just the rare twig or blade of grass maybe?

I missed some good shots here - and this looks odd because it's taken THROUGH the binoculars. There was quite an air show going on - a bluejay was sitting on the cuke trellis, and the bluebirds were having a FIT!!! They kept divebombing the bluejay and he finally gave up and left.

This spot also seems pretty appealing to a robin, but the bluebirds aren't nearly as bothered by him. I think he just sits there and watches for bugs anyhow...so maybe he's not a threat?

Speaking of birds...these guys have been out in one of the trees on the front porch. Yup, those trees are still out there, and yup, there was another batch of eggs/babies. Once these guys are gone, I'll work real fast to get the trees cleaned up and in the basement before anyone else can lay eggs in them! Just two house finches this time...
