Seeing Red

Mary's well known for her green thumb...she has a real knack for making plants just take off and grow! She actually has this problem where she can have amaryllis grow SO WELL and produce so many extra bulbs that they break the pots they're in!!

A year or so ago she gave me some of her spare bulbs, but they were slow to take off and didn't do much. At the end of summer this past year I moved them from the deck down to the basement grow lights, along with some of the other plants. Just recently, one of them started putting out a big shoot from the middle, and within a week or so I had this:

Nice, hunh?? And popping out from the shoot not long after was:

By now the first two blooms have faded and been removed, but a third (and final) flower has opened up. And I just noticed the other night that another one of the amaryllis is starting to put out a new shoot! Sweet! Sure, they weren't around for Christmas, which amaryllis are traditionally known for, but I'm not complaining! They're adding a nice splash of color during the starkness of winter... Thanks Mary!

They can have THE best blooms. We have a white one now and surprisingly, it's just as gorgeous!

Lovely. I wonder why they get associated with Christmas, though - the time of year or the colour? When you lived in Hawaii, did you see lots of them there?
