I know, I know, I'm waaaaa-aaaa-aaaay behind on posts! I've got a TON of pics from Chicago to post, plenty of the garden, and unfortunately, not too many of good food that I've made. I guess these next pics cover the last two categories - "food I've 'made'" and "garden"!
Here's what the strawberry patch was looking like last week:
And tonite?
So far I've had two mostly ripe strawberries nibbled from the underside by some sort of critter (slugs maybe?), and those had to be pitched, one PERFECTLY ripe strawberry (pictured above), and one that was just short of perfect.
We ate them! (Minus the slug-nibbled ones!) Tassssty! No, not the biggest of strawberries (hopefully bigger ones are yet to come with warmer weather and more rain?), but they had a freshness you just don't get from even the best of the grocery store/farmer's market berries. Sure, I'm no Finny, who picks a handful a day, but this is my first year with strawberries, I've got poor soil, and these plants are just starting. Gimme time!
In the meantime, I'll have some secret little garden snacks while I do the rounds after work! ;-)

Beautiful strawberries, Jeph!
mmmmmmmmmmmm
Bigger isn't always better. These? Look just right!
Look at that color! Beautiful :) I bet they even taste "red".
If it makes you feel better, I'm not between rounds with the berries, so I handful picked for a few weeks and now I'm waiting for all of last week's blooms to turn into next week's berries.
Patience I guess? It's so hard.
Thanks guys - it's amazing how proud one can feel of some little red berries coming out on one's own back yard! I mean, if you get right down to it, they're "just" berries.
But DAMN FINE berries! ;-)
And yes, Finny, they DID taste red!!
