The drive to New York

This has been our first Christmas together with a dog, and it seems like when you have a dog, you often take the dog with you places. And the holidays mean traveling. So Doogie got to go on his first visit to New York for the holidays...and what an adventure it was!

Here's Brett showing Doogie his first rest stop:

And Doogie taking in all the wonderful scents! Mmmmm - salt and exhaust!

I had wondered if we should've asked the vet for something to maybe help "take the edge off", just in case Doogie didn't do well with a 5 hour drive. Well, trust me, after about an hour, we were both REALLY wishing I'd asked! The poor guy (Doogie) got REAL fidgety and wanted to be up front, and then in the back and just all over the place, so the OTHER poor guy (Brett) got the job of guarding the front of the car from the dog. I felt bad for Brett - he'd fallen on the ice while we were loading the car, and I figured he'd be in serious pain (which is why HE'D taken something to "take the edge off", although I don't think Aleve is all that exciting), and didn't also need the stress of a fidgety pooch.

I just had the fun job of driving for five hours (and if it were up to me, there'd be ZERO stops!! Brett, and now Doogie, however, DO need rest stop breaks. Wusses!).

"Are we almost there yet?!"

The good news (for us) was that Doogie was SO worn out from Christmas in New York that he slept almost the entire ride back. It was cute - we had the cooler set between/behind our two front seats, so it was up against the back seat of the car. He was able to lay on the back seat a bit and stretch out onto the cooler so he could rest his head on either of our two chairs/legs. That's the best kind of traveling dog - the sleepy, warm and cozy kind! ;-)
